Ethiopian Airlines Expands Domestic Network with Inauguration of Negele Borena Geda Airport
Ethiopian Airlines, the fastest-growing airline in Africa, has taken another major step in strengthening its domestic connectivity. In a colorful ceremony held today, the airline officially inaugurated the new Negele Borena Geda Airport and launched passenger flights to the town of Negele Borena, located in the Oromia Regional State.
The event was graced by high-profile dignitaries, including the Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, His Excellency Dr. Abiy Ahmed, and the President of the Oromia Regional State, His Excellency Shimelis Abdisa. Also in attendance were Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Mr. Mesfin Tasew, senior government officials, airline executives, local community representatives, and other key stakeholders.
The inauguration marks the beginning of a thrice-weekly passenger service to Negele Borena, further integrating the town into the national aviation network. With this addition, Ethiopian Airlines’ total number of domestic destinations has grown to 24.
During the ceremony, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed praised Ethiopian Airlines for its relentless efforts to connect remote parts of the country, emphasizing that improved air access will boost trade, tourism, and socio-economic development in the region. The new airport is expected to facilitate smoother travel for residents and open up opportunities for investment and mobility.
The launch of flights to Negele Borena underscores Ethiopian Airlines’ strategic vision of leaving no region behind, ensuring that even smaller towns benefit from safe, reliable, and efficient air transport.
