Ethiopian Airlines to Triple Domestic Reach with Three New Airports and Expanded Passenger Services

Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s largest network operator, has announced a significant expansion of its domestic footprint with the inauguration of three new airports and the launch of scheduled passenger services by mid-April 2026.

The new facilities, located in the towns of Negele Borena, Gore Metu, and Debre Markos, will be served by thrice-weekly flights, marking a major step in enhancing air connectivity across the country. Once operational, the addition will bring the airline’s total domestic network to 26 destinations.

The move underscores the national carrier’s commitment to bridging the gap between remote communities and economic hubs. In an official statement, Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Mr. Mesfin Tasew highlighted the broader vision behind the expansion.

“The inauguration of these three new airports, along with the commencement of passenger services, represents a major milestone for Ethiopian Airlines and for the nation as a whole,” Mr. Tasew said. “This expansion reflects our steadfast commitment to enhancing connectivity within Ethiopia and serves as a powerful driver of economic growth and regional development. Our mission is to build an inclusive and integrated air transport network that empowers communities, unlocks economic opportunities, and supports national development by making safe, reliable, and efficient air travel accessible to all.”

The development builds on recent momentum in the airline’s domestic strategy. In 2025, Ethiopian marked the opening of Yabello airport as its 23rd domestic destination. As the carrier integrates these three new locations into its schedule, it continues to prioritize infrastructure modernization and service enhancement to ensure a seamless travel experience for passengers throughout the nation.
