Kenya Suspends Importation of Fokker 27 and Fokker 50 Aircraft

In a decisive move to bolster aviation safety, the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) has announced the immediate suspension of importation of Fokker 27 and Fokker 50 aircraft.

The sweeping directive, which took effect on 31st October 2025. The decision is rooted in proactive safety measures following a comprehensive review by the Authority.

Key Directives of the KCAA Circular:

Importation Ban: The importation of these aircraft types for the purpose of registration and operation in Kenya is prohibited with immediate effect.

Halt on New Registrations: The KCAA will no longer process new applications for type acceptance, registration, or the issuance of Certificates of Airworthiness for any Fokker 27 or Fokker 50 aircraft.

Phase-out of Existing Fleet: Existing Fokker 27 and Fokker 50 aircraft already on the Kenyan register will be phased out. They may continue to operate only until their eventual deregistration or permanent grounding, whichever comes first, pending further stakeholder engagement. This continued operation is strictly conditional on their unwavering compliance with all applicable safety requirements.

Advice to Aviation Stakeholders

The KCAA has strongly advised all aviation companies and operators against acquiring or making plans to operate Fokker 27 or Fokker 50 aircraft, as they will no longer be authorized for service in Kenya.

“This is a critical update for all players in the aviation sector,” said Kenya Civil Aviation Authority Director General Emile N. Arao. “We urge all airlines and operators to take note of this directive when applying for or renewing Air Operator Certificates (AOC) and related aviation licenses.”

The Authority has affirmed its commitment to working with affected stakeholders to ensure a smooth and orderly transition in line with the highest standards of aviation safety.
