Uganda to Establish a Trade Hub at Entebbe International Airport

Uganda is set to establish a trade hub at Entebbe International Airport, a move aimed at boosting both trade and tourism in the country.

This was revealed by Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala, Uganda’s Minister of Works and Transport during his opening remarks at Uganda Civil Aviation Authority’s stake holders breakfast meeting held in Kampala today 5th of December 2023 as part of the events to mark the International aviation week in Uganda.

“In further recognition of air transport as a key driver to socio-economic development worldwide, the ministry is working hand in hand with Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA) in liaison with other stakeholders in tourism and trade to work out a mechanism of establishing a trade hub at Entebbe International Airport” reiterated Minister Wamala.

The Minister also went ahead to congratulate the entire aviation industry in Uganda for the excellent performance recorded in the just concluded Universal Safety and Oversight Audit Program-Continuous Monitoring Approach (USOAP-CMA) where Uganda scored a vote of 72.2% which has enhanced international community’s faith in Uganda’s safety system.

In his speech, Uganda Civil Aviation Authority Director General Mr. Fred Bamwesigye noted that currently, Uganda is being serviced by 16 international scheduled operators, boasting a total of 26 licensed operators. Mr. Bamwesigye went ahead to note that there are 52 active Bilateral Air Service Agreements currently in place.

The climax of the aviation week is the international civil aviation day commemorated on December 7th of every year. The international civil aviation day was first celebrated in 1994 on the 50th anniversary of the signing of the famous Chicago convention which led to the establishment of International Civil Aviation Authority (ICAO).
