Tragedy at Durban Airshow as Aircraft Crashes into Sea

A routine air display turned tragic on Thursday afternoon when an Extra 300 aerobatic aircraft crashed into the sea during the Durban Airshow along the North Coast Beach, near Suncoast Casino.

The South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) confirmed the incident, which occurred at approximately 13:45. The aircraft, registered ZS-AEC, was performing its final display maneuver when it went down.

Emergency medical teams and law enforcement officers rushed to the scene within minutes. A large-scale search and rescue operation was launched and was ongoing late into the evening.

SACAA Director of Civil Aviation, Ms. Poppy Khoza, expressed condolences to those affected. “We are deeply saddened by the incident and are keeping the pilot, family, and friends in our thoughts as rescue efforts continue. Our focus now is on the mission unfolding, while appreciating the efforts of the teams on the ground and wishing them strength,” she said.

The Accident and Incident Investigations Division (AIID) has opened an inquiry into the cause of the crash. Authorities have urged the public to remain patient as investigations proceed.

The Durban Airshow, which draws thousands of aviation enthusiasts each year, was temporarily halted following the incident.
