African Union Brings Continental Stakeholders Together in Pretoria to Advance Sustainable Aviation Fuel

The Continental Workshop on Policy Guidelines and Model Regulations marks a key step toward a unified African framework for SAF.

The African Union Commission (AUC) has convened a Continental Workshop on the Validation of Policy Guidelines and Model Regulations for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in Pretoria, bringing together governments, regional institutions, industry leaders, and development partners.

The gathering is designed to advance a coordinated continental framework for SAF, supporting Africa’s transition toward sustainable aviation while strengthening regulatory harmonization and investment readiness across member states.

Sustainable aviation fuel offers a critical pathway to decarbonize the aviation sector. With the ability to reduce lifecycle emissions by up to 80 percent compared to conventional jet fuel, SAF also presents significant opportunities to unlock broader economic benefits across the continent.

The initiative builds on the SAF/LCAF Continental Strategy and Action Plan (2025–2030), adopted by the African Union in February 2025. It reflects growing continental momentum to position Africa as a competitive player in the global green aviation value chain.

Africa is well placed to scale SAF production, endowed with abundant renewable energy resources and sustainable feedstocks. However, advancing this agenda will require coordinated policy frameworks, targeted investment, and strong partnerships across governments, industry, and development finance institutions.
