United Nigeria Airlines Signs Landmark Deal for Six Boeing 737-800 Jets

United Nigeria Airlines has signed a landmark agreement with Southwest Airlines for the delivery of six Boeing 737-800 aircraft, marking a major step in its fleet modernization and expansion strategy. The deal positions the carrier to strengthen Nigeria’s role in the global aviation market and deliver enhanced connectivity across domestic, regional, and international routes.

The Boeing 737-800, renowned for its fuel efficiency, reliability, and passenger comfort, will enable United Nigeria Airlines to reduce operating costs, minimize environmental impact, and improve customer experience. With a range of 2,935 nautical miles and seating for up to 189 passengers, the aircraft is well-suited for both short- and medium-haul operations.

Speaking at the signing ceremony in Dallas, United Nigeria Airlines’ Executive Chairman, Professor Obiora Okonkwo, described the acquisition as a “game changer” for the airline.

“After four years of reliable operations, the Boeing 737-800 upgrade will pave the way for profitable expansion. This fleet will allow us to launch new services while offering competitive fares to more passengers and cargo customers,” he said.

Professor Okonkwo emphasized that the deal aligns with Nigeria’s broader economic agenda under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. He highlighted the thousands of direct and indirect jobs that the expansion will create, alongside the improved point-to-point travel options for Nigerians and Africans, reducing costly stopovers.

The agreement also includes technical and operational support from Southwest Airlines, ensuring ongoing training and maintenance partnerships. Okonkwo noted that Southwest’s globally recognized maintenance culture was a decisive factor in the collaboration.

United Nigeria Airlines further revealed plans to acquire an additional four Boeing 737-800 Next Generation aircraft, bringing its total order to ten. Deliveries are scheduled between the first quarter of 2026 and the first quarter of 2027.

Boeing’s Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing for Africa, Anbessie Yitbarek, welcomed the new partnership:

“We are pleased to welcome United Nigeria Airlines to the 737 family with its first 737-800. The aircraft will deliver superior reliability, fuel efficiency, and strong returns in today’s competitive market,” he said.

The deal was facilitated by SkyWorks Holdings, LLC. Anders Hebrand, the firm’s Chief Commercial Officer, praised the agreement, saying: “We are pleased to have partnered with Southwest Airlines in their fleet modernization. With United Nigeria Airlines, these 737-800s have found an excellent home in the African market, where they will remain productive for many years.”

United Nigeria Airlines continues to establish itself as one of Africa’s fastest-growing carriers. Backed by partnerships with Boeing, Southwest Airlines, and SkyWorks Holdings, the airline is building a sustainable future while reinforcing Nigeria’s role as a key player in regional and global connectivity.
