Strike Ends at JKIA as Aviation Union Signs Return-to-Work Deal

Normal operations are gradually resuming at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) following the signing of a return-to-work formula between the Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) and airport management, bringing an end to a two-day strike by Air Traffic Control (ATC) staff that paralyzed flights and stranded thousands of passengers.

The industrial action, which began early Monday, saw ATC personnel withdraw their services over unresolved grievances, forcing several airlines to cancel or delay flights at East Africa’s busiest aviation hub. Travelers were left frustrated as departure boards displayed cancellations and check-in counters remained largely empty during the peak travel period.

Mediation Breakthrough

The stalemate was broken late Tuesday following a high-level mediation meeting convened by Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir. The talks, held at the ministry headquarters, brought together key stakeholders including the Ministry of Labour, Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) management, Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) representatives, and the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA).

Sources familiar with the negotiations indicate that the breakthrough came after both sides agreed to address the workers’ concerns through a structured dialogue mechanism, with commitments to implement resolutions within specified timelines. While the specific details of the agreement remain confidential, union representatives expressed satisfaction with the outcome.

“We have reached a consensus that serves the interests of our members while recognizing the critical role aviation plays in our national economy,” a KAWU official said following the signing.

Operations Resuming

KAA Acting Managing Director and CEO Dr. Mohamud Gedi confirmed the resolution in an official statement, expressing gratitude to all parties for their constructive engagement throughout the mediation process.

“Operations are now normalizing across all the airports. Passengers are requested to contact their airlines for the latest flight schedules,” Dr. Gedi stated.

Airline officials at JKIA reported that departure and arrival schedules were being updated progressively, with the first flights since the strike began departing in the late afternoon. Ground staff were seen assisting passengers with rebookings and providing updates on revised departure times.

Dispute Background

The strike by ATC staff had its roots in longstanding grievances related to working conditions, remuneration, and staffing levels at the country’s main airport. Union officials had previously issued strike notices warning of industrial action if their concerns were not addressed, but last-minute negotiations failed to avert the walkout.

Aviation industry experts note that air traffic controllers play a critical role in ensuring flight safety, and any disruption to their services inevitably cascades into widespread travel chaos. The strike highlighted the strategic vulnerability of Kenya’s aviation sector, which serves as a regional gateway and contributes significantly to the national economy.

Broader Implications

The resolution of the strike brings relief not only to travelers but also to cargo operators and businesses that rely on air freight for time-sensitive shipments. Kenya’s horticulture sector, which exports millions of flowers and vegetables to European markets daily, had expressed concern over potential losses if the disruption continued.

Industry observers suggest that the dispute underscores the need for sustainable industrial relations frameworks within Kenya’s critical infrastructure sectors. The successful mediation, they note, demonstrates the effectiveness of dialogue in resolving labor disputes when all parties commit to constructive engagement.

Commitment to Safety

In his statement, Dr. Gedi reiterated KAA’s unwavering commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety and operational excellence across all airports under its jurisdiction.

“KAA reiterates its commitment to safety and operational excellence across all airports,” he affirmed, signaling the authority’s determination to restore full normalcy while ensuring that safety protocols remain paramount.

Looking Ahead

As operations stabilize, attention now turns to the implementation of agreements reached during mediation. Aviation stakeholders will be watching closely to ensure that the return-to-work formula translates into lasting solutions that prevent similar disruptions in the future.

Passengers with pending travel arrangements are advised to maintain close contact with their airlines for real-time updates on flight schedules as the normalization process continues.
