Kigali Set to Launch Africa’s First Self-Flying Air Taxi

Rwanda is preparing to make aviation history with the launch of Africa’s first self-flying electric air taxi, in partnership with China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) and urban air mobility pioneer EHang. The groundbreaking demonstration will take place during the Aviation Africa 2025 Summit in Kigali on September 4–5.

The announcement was made by the Ministry of Infrastructure on September 3, confirming that the EHang EH216-S electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft will stage its maiden public flight on the continent.

Pioneering Advanced Air Mobility in Africa

According to the ministry, the project positions Rwanda as a regional leader in Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) — an emerging sector that integrates autonomous, electric-powered aircraft into urban transportation networks to ease congestion, connect communities, and promote sustainable travel.

“By hosting this historic event, Rwanda aims to attract investment and technology partners to its emerging air mobility market, building on our successful history of pioneering drone delivery services,” the statement read.

Strategic Partnerships for Innovation

Minister of Infrastructure Jimmy Gasore emphasized that Rwanda’s collaboration with CRBC provides the foundation for integrating new technologies into its transport ecosystem.

“Rwanda is actively building a future where our cities are more connected and our economy is more dynamic through innovative transport solutions,” Gasore said.

“By collaborating on this historic flight, we are not only showcasing the future of aviation but also demonstrating our dedication to fostering a safe, progressive regulatory environment for advanced air mobility.”

CRBC echoed this sentiment, highlighting the strategic significance of the partnership.

Huang Qilin, Director General of CRBC Rwanda Office, stated: “We are proud to partner with the Government of Rwanda to support their vision of becoming a pioneer in aviation technology. Leveraging our global network and engineering strength, we look forward to exploring the potential of the low-altitude economy and creating new models for innovative development across the continent.”

A First for Africa

The upcoming demonstration of the EH216-S pilotless eVTOL will serve as a live case study for African regulators, aviation stakeholders, and investors. It marks a milestone not only for Rwanda but for the entire continent, showcasing how autonomous air taxis could transform urban mobility in Africa.

By pioneering such technologies, Rwanda reinforces its reputation as a testbed for innovation in aviation, following its globally recognized success with drone-based medical deliveries.
