Ethiopian Airlines Group Commences Construction of Bishoftu International Airport

In a landmark ceremony that marks a significant leap forward for Ethiopian aviation and the nation’s infrastructure, the Ethiopian Airlines Group has officially commenced the construction of the Bishoftu International Airport. The historic groundbreaking event, held on 10th January 2026 signifies the start of an ambitious project set to bolster Ethiopia’s position as a leading aviation hub in Africa.

The ceremony was a momentous occasion, graced by the presence of His Excellency Dr. Abiy Ahmed, the Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. He was joined by a distinguished assembly of federal ministers, high-level government officials, prominent industry leaders, key stakeholders, and the executive leadership of Ethiopian Airlines, underscoring the project’s national importance and collaborative foundation.

The new Bishoftu International Airport represents a strategic expansion of Ethiopia’s aviation capabilities. Located in the town of Bishoftu, approximately 40 kilometers southeast of Addis Ababa, the airport is designed to complement the existing Bole International Airport. It is envisioned as a modern, state-of-the-art facility that will enhance operational efficiency, accommodate growing passenger and cargo traffic, and support the continued explosive growth of Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s largest and most profitable carrier.

“This groundbreaking is not just about laying a foundation for a new runway and terminal; it is about laying the foundation for Ethiopia’s future economic growth and global connectivity,” said a representative from Ethiopian Airlines at the event. “Bishoftu International Airport will be a catalyst for development, creating thousands of jobs, stimulating tourism, and facilitating international trade.”

The project aligns with Ethiopia’s broader economic and infrastructure development goals, aiming to decentralize air traffic and create a multi-airport system for the capital region. It is expected to feature advanced technology, sustainable design elements, and capacity to handle wide-body aircraft, thereby strengthening the country’s logistics and transport network.

Industry analysts highlight that the expansion is a proactive move to manage future demand and maintain Ethiopian Airlines’ competitive edge. The airline has consistently recorded robust growth, expanding its global network to over 130 international destinations.

The commencement of construction on January 10, 2026, will be remembered as a pivotal date in the nation’s transportation history. As the project moves from blueprint to reality, Bishoftu International Airport stands poised to become a new gateway to Ethiopia, symbolizing ambition, progress, and the unwavering spirit of Ethiopian enterprise on the world stage.
