Emirates Bans In-Flight Use of Power Banks from October 2025
Emirates will prohibit the use of all power banks onboard its flights from 1 October 2025, citing enhanced safety measures.
Passengers will still be allowed to carry one power bank under 100 Watt Hours in their cabin baggage, but it must remain unused for the duration of the flight. The device may neither be used to charge personal electronics nor be recharged using the aircraft’s power supply.
Under the revised rules:
-
Only one power bank (≤100 Wh) is permitted per passenger.
-
Charging of personal devices via power banks is banned onboard.
-
Charging power banks from aircraft power sources is banned.
-
Accepted units must have visible capacity labelling.
-
Power banks must be kept in the seat pocket or under the seat — not in overhead bins.
-
Placement in checked luggage remains prohibited.
The airline says the policy aims to mitigate fire hazards linked to lithium-ion and lithium-polymer batteries, which power most portable chargers. If such batteries are damaged or overcharged, they can enter thermal runaway, a chain reaction of heat buildup that can lead to fire, explosions, and toxic gas release.
By banning in-flight use, Emirates intends to reduce the risk of mid-air battery incidents and improve overall cabin safety.
